There are many different types of careers in medicine that one can decide to pursue, one of which is: neurology. Neurology deals with the study of the nervous system. As a neurologist you would diagnose and treat disorders of the brain and spinal cord. Work responsibilities include: evaluating patients with neurological symptoms, conducting detailed investigations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing treatment plans.

Becoming a neurologist takes years and years of school and hard work. Ultimately, it would take around 8 years of schooling to become a basic neurologist. You must get your bachelor’s degree from a 4 year undergraduate college, and then get your medical degree from a 4 year medical school. After that, you have the option to do a fellowship after 5-7 years of residency, this is mainly if you would like to specialize in a field of neurology.


Although there is a lot of schooling and student debt involved in the process of becoming a neurologist, the average pay rate makes it worth it. Not only that but if you choose to specialize in a field of neurology then you have the ability to make even more than the average neurologist. The average salary for a neurologist is $230k-410k per year. The job is expected to have a growth rate of about 11% by the year 2026, which means that it is a stable career that is on the rise.

A typical neurologist should be calm, investigative, communicative, and social, as well as, have background experience in conducting EMGs and electroencephalographies. If you choose to specialize, then you should be familiarized in those particular areas. So, if you meet these criteria and enjoy working in hospitals, clinics, or private practices, then you should consider neurology as a future career.
