Tips for Before and After Your COVID-19 Vaccine Appointment
—Houston, TX
Now that the COVID-19 vaccine has become more widely accessible, even more people are becoming vaccinated. Knowing that this pandemic might be nearing its end can be an exciting moment. In doing so, it is important to prepare for the vaccine and take care afterwards to avoid as many side effects as possible.
Leading up to the vaccine, it is important to take care of your body. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, get enough sleep, and eat healthy foods. Staying healthy can boost your immune system, helping your body react properly to the vaccine.
On the day of your vaccination, make sure to bring proper documents to show identification, and show up to the appointment promptly so you don’t have to reschedule. Dress comfortably, and wear a short sleeved shirt so that the vaccine administrator can reach your arm. Avoid taking pain relievers such as Ibuprofen beforehand as this may lessen the vaccine’s effectiveness.
Immediately after receiving the vaccine, prepare to wait for up to 30 minutes to make sure you have no allergic reaction. Exercise your arm to avoid soreness by rotating it in circles or extending it outwards. Do not rub the area of the shot, however, as this may cause even more soreness. Only take pain medicine as needed, as this may lower your immune response to the vaccine.
After your first vaccination, schedule your second vaccine and make sure to keep your vaccination card for your next appointment. Monitor your health and rest whenever necessary. Maintain a healthy diet, as this will support your immune system and energize you. Make sure to still follow proper COVID-19 guidelines as the vaccine will not be in full effect until 2 weeks after your second vaccination. Wear a mask, socially distance, and stay safe!
