Houston, TX
STEM·E Youth Career Development Program recently won $20,000 of grant funding from Howmet Aerospace Inc. in order to expand our STEM·E Talks workshops. Through this program, STEM·E seeks to educate local students with a focus on aerospace and transportation. With this donation supporting our workshops, STEM·E expects to positively impact a minimum of 800 students as well as support local Houston communities alongside Howmet.
STEM·E is pleased to use this grant towards its STEM·E Talks workshops, which uplift students from underprivileged families through presentations by professionals and career-specific hands-on activities which give students critical experience in STEM fields. As STEM·E's executive director Andria Balogh states, “The Howmet Aerospace grant will allow us to expand our reach and impact for the work we do at STEM·E. With Howmet's support, we can increase access and exposure to STEM and business professions, allowing students to make educated professional decisions prior to matriculating to college.” This donation from Howmet will allow us to expand both the number of workshops and the number of students impacted by each workshop. STEM·E plans to host 10 hybrid (both virtual and in-person) events over the course of 12 months with 15 professional speakers in aerospace and transportation-based careers. These events will maximize accessibility by requiring no cost for admission and providing free meals. The grant funds will be allocated to purchase program supplies, participant meals, facility fees, marketing and advertising, personnel expenses, and overhead operations.
STEM·E will measure the success of the program through participant assessments before and after events, as well as gamified assessments during events. STEM·E will also track the career trajectory of participants to measure long-term future success. Furthermore, STEM·E will measure success by tracking milestones of the workshops. We aim to have at least 80 students sign up for each event, 75 students complete each workshop, 65 students actively learning and engaged, and at least 65 students very satisfied with the learning opportunity.
STEM-E is an organization that strives to close the education gap in STEM in order to develop the next generation of leaders. Our program seeks to give youth access to technical skills required for success which they have not been given by the education system, and seeks to rectify the disparity among women, minorities, and other underprivileged groups in STEM professions and leadership roles. This donation will help us achieve our mission by providing the opportunity for students to learn technical and career-specific skills through hands-on projects in the workshops. The STEM·E Talks workshops will integrate STEM and entrepreneurship to drive professional and critical thinking skills in the students.
This partnership with Howmet will help STEM·E drive future success in the Houston community by providing volunteer opportunities for professional Howmet employees. These opportunities include participation as event speakers, event mentors and leaders, interviewees, social media contributors, and student mentors. Through these roles, Howmet employees will be able to help students better understand the realistic nature of various STEM professions by encouraging students to actively participate in workshop activities. These volunteers will also provide a lasting platform for students to learn about professions and focus their passions prior to college.
Howmet Aerospace Foundation is an organization that invests in STEM and technical education with an emphasis on providing opportunities for underrepresented individuals. Their employees work to enhance their community through workforce development opportunities which align with inclusion and diversity efforts. The goals of STEM·E workshops align with Howmet’s mission to invest in the future workforce by giving underrepresented children access to education about STEM fields. STEM·E looks forward to this partnership with Howmet to educate and uplift students from all backgrounds and form the next generation of leaders in STEM fields.
